Wildfire Operations Course

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service are running a two-day wildfire course for their own personnel and have some spare places available to offer to the Wildfire Group.
The course is planned to run on 22nd and 23rd May 2013 at the Northumberland Fire and Rescue Services’s HQ at West Hartford, Cramlington. Each day will start at 9am and conclude at 5pm. Topics to be covered include map reading and compass work, the wildfire environment (fuel, topography and weather), the LACES safety protocol, Wildfire Prediction, fire suppression, table top exercises and informal assessment.
Both mid morning and mid afternoon refreshments will be provided though any attendees will have to purchase or provide their own lunch. European Protected Species Training

Where: Hamsterley Forest

This training will be run by the Forestry Commission and is designed for woodland owners and agents, with the aim that by the end of the day, participants will be able to identify likely habitats for the key species and how best to undertake work to ensure compliance with good practice, reducing the need for an EPS licence.
The training will involve a brief indoor session to remind attendees of the basics of the legislation and habitat requirements for the individual species, with the largest part of the day being based outdoors.
The fee for attending is £50pp. This is to help cover the running costs of the event. Payment is required in advance and is non-refundable. Please click here to book places and make payment.

Ancient Ash Trees and their Future

On Tuesday 30th May there will be a talk by Ted Wilson about the role of our ancient ash tress within the landscape and the effect of the fungal disease now threatening them.
Ted Wilson is a silviculturist and forest sientist. Among other posts, he is an Associate Lecture at teh National School of Forestry in Cumbria.
Cost is £2.50 to cover expenses with any profit being donated to Woodland Heritage.
