Event Details

This FREE event is aimed to encourage landowners to bring their woodlands into sustainable active management by showing the economic and environmental benefits of doing so.   The event will show how, by using appropriate equipment, machinery and skilled workers and by taking advantage of strong markets and grants, many woodlands can be brought back into cost effective management.  It will also showcase how adding value to produce on site can make work in small woodlands more financially viable.

The event will comprise of two distinct sessions.  The first session will be made up of brief presentations/discussions to introduce a range of local initiatives and forestry companies which could help support landowners to bring their woodland into active management, as well as a tour of a firewood producer depot (Woodfuel Barn) to learn about this local resource.

The afternoon session will include a visit to a local woodland, Milkwellburn Wood, which is owned by Durham Wildlife Trust.  During this session attendees will be able to see some of the management in action with demonstrations from small scale forestry equipment and green wood workers.  Attendees will also be able to see how woodland management can be taken forward with the use of volunteers. Forestry Commission staff will be on hand to advise on felling licence requirements and grants.

Making Woodlands Work- Land of Oak & Iron is being delivered by Northwoods on behalf of the Land of Oak & Iron and the Forestry Commission.
