US policy of complete fire suppression has affected vegetation characteristics, which caused an increase in wildfire behaviour and the occurrence of catastrophic wildfires.
Changes to UK land management strategies will also affect vegetation characteristics, in turn affecting wildfire behaviour.
Lessons learned from the US could be applied to developing land management strategies in the UK today.
