Entrepreneurs across the nation are today being invited to bid for a share of £2million aimed at spurring on innovation in bioenergy.

As set out in the Government’s 2012 bioenergy strategy, sustainably sourced bioenergy could contribute around 8-11% to the UK’s total primary energy demand by 2020. More investment is however needed in research, development and demonstration projects to drive forward innovation and improve efficiency, from methods used to harvest plants for energy production to the systems used to generate power from these sources.

The Forestry Commission have released an update on a new threat to tree health, the highly destructive Chalara fraxinea fungus. Chalara causes severe dieback of ash trees, particularly young trees which can be killed within one growing season of symptoms becoming visible, and has been responsible for widespread damage in continental Europe. The first appearance in Great Britain was confirmed in a Buckinghamshire nursery in early 2012.

Wildfire Training Courses

RDI offer a range of wildfire training courses to help you respond efficiently and effectively to a wildfire event, from classroom based courses to live events. These are aimed at land owners and managers, gamekeepers, Fire and Rescue Service personnel or anyone with an interest in wildfire. Courses are organised according to demand and include;

Basic Wildfire Fighting – covering the principles of wildfire behaviour, supression techniques, health and safety and how to work effectively with Fire and Rescue Service.
