Successful BEn meeting in Güssing "Eko Energie Land"

7 May 2010 9:33am

At the end of April 2010 Kasia and Ben from RDI represented the North East at the three European Biomass Projects meeting in Güssing, Austria. The team of the project group BEn met for a project meeting as well as to participate in a Synergy Working Meeting with the projects MAKE-IT-BE and BioEnerGIS.

All three projects are co-funded by the Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) Programme and deal with topics of biomass assessments, support for regional bioenergy planning and development of biomass markets. Looking at these themes from slightly different perspectives the projects strive for efficient exchange of best practise and harmonisation of methodologies.

Guessing meeting

On the first day of the meeting, the so called  “Model Güssing” was presented. It is a strategy for the "energy self-supply" in peripheral areas using all available renewable resources of the region. The informative introduction to the regional concept has been given by the members of management team of European Centre of Renewable Energy (EEE) followed by site visits to the biomass installations:
- Biomass CHP Plant in Güssing (2000 kWe, 4x500 kWth)
- Harvesting site in local woodland
- Biomass boiler (650 kW) and PVC (594 kW)
- Biogas plant in Strem (500 kWe, 600 kWth).
To find out more about the activities of EEE and the achievements of the Güssing region, called also "Eko-Energie Land" visit the EEE website.

The separate project meetings took place on the second day. During the BEn meeting, information of the progress of work was presented, current issues and evaluations criteria of quality control were discussed and further steps determined.

The Synergy Working Meeting took place on the 30th of April on which approximately 50 people from 3 projects came together to commonly discuss the improvements of the projects and exchange experiences. This meeting was also a good opportunity to introduce and welcome the new project officer Emilio Font de Mora, who supervises the three projects.

Days 2 and 3 were used for discussion of the projects progress and the harmonisation of biomass assessments, networking and planning approaches. All three projects are in their middle stage and interim reports are due for submission to the EC within the next month.
