Tree and Timber Measurement Course

Tree and Timber Measurement and and use of the myForest platform forest inventory tool

19th September 2024
The Smithy, Aske Estate, Richmond, DL10 5HJ
This one day training course is aimed at landowners, woodland managers and land agents who have an interest in being able to estimate the volume of growing trees or timber within their woodlands.
By the end of the course, students will have covered the following outcomes:
● explain why trees are measured
● explain mensuration conventions
● measure individual tree parameters
● measure stand parameters
● select appropriate methods of determining volume of individual trees and forest stands
● establish the volume of an individual tree
● establish the volume of a stand
● measure timber by weight
● visit an appropriate uniform stand to measure trees as an exercise
● understand the principles of timber grading and marketing
● use of the myForest platform forest inventory tool
The course is Lantra Awards accredited and the day will be split between classroom and woodland to provide students with both the theory and practical side of timber measurement.
This course is designed to teach the woodland owner or manager to understand the volume assessment of single or stands of trees. Such information is key to the analysis of past growth performance, the implementation of future management, the estimation of the product to be harvested and the identification of appropriate marketing and timescales. This course is useful for those who own or manage trees or woodlands and wish to measure them to apply future management or simply to ‘know what they have got’, or to understand what professionals are doing when they measure them on their behalf. The course includes practical exercises in a forest setting.
