A story of ancient woodland, back to nature camping, innovation and inspiring a love of the woods.
The Northwoods Innovation Programme hosted a webinar with the Birling Estate exploring how they have diversified their woodlands and derived additional incomes on 30th January 2024.
Original Event Description
Northwoods is joined by Guy from the Birling Estate in Kent.
Guy will tell the story of how Birling Estate has brought its woodlands into management and derived additional incomes from them.
“A story of ancient woodland, back to nature camping, innovation and inspiring a love of the woods. In 2012 we obtained temporary permission to open up a woodland campsite in ancient woodland. We now have over 6000 visitors a year, selling more than 50cubm of firewood, and offering woodland experiences. The purchase of a small estate sawmill led to an Forestry Commission funded joint research project with London Met School of Architecture and Grown in Britain to investigate the use of Sweet Chestnut coppice in construction and the build of a small cabin and treehouse.”
